Course Overview

This certified course is designed for communication professionals and those tasked with embeddding effective ESG communications, who are keen to better understand climate science, climate change, sustainability agendas and the changing business operating landscape and the role and impact marketing can make. The course is independently certified by The Carbon Literacy Trust providing communication professionals and those tasked with embedding ESG with an opportunity to formally certify as Carbon Literate.

Carbon Literacy for ESG -8 Hours* / 8 Modules

This training is designed to support those embedding ESG within an organisations to gain a solid understanding of the many complexities of climate change, considering how it impacts business and indeed the role effective ESG communication plays.

This programme is designed for businesses and communicators at all levels, across all specialisms and roles.​

This course explores the climate landscape, the science behind the challenge we face and most importantly the solutions. You will explore the critical role of organisations and specifically ESG communications, discussing how you can respond and drive meaningful conversations, solutions and actions at both a personal level within a role and at a group level within an organisation. ​

This course is accredited by The Carbon Literacy Trust. Upon successful completion of this course, and all that it entails, you will certify as a Carbon Literate citizen.

Certification Requirements

The Carbon Literacy for ESG Communications Training Course and Carbon Literacy Trust Certification requires a mandatory 8 hours of training, Therefore, alongside the 6 hours of online course modules, there are other resources for you to explore which make up the additional 2 hours.

To complete the certification, there is a mandatory facilitated 1 hour group discussion, where all learners will get to choose a date that suits them to join one of the regular online ‘Zoom’ meetings. This facilitated discussion enables learners to meet others and to discuss their assignments / Evidence Form submissions and ask any questions. All details of how to book onto the facilitated discussions, and how to complete the Evidence Form submissions are clearly explained and accessible within the training modules.

Module 2

The Complexity of Climate Change and Sustainability - Part 2

  • Understanding Green House Gases (GHG).

  • Considering implications such as changing weather.

  • World Overshoot Day.

  • How behaviours need to change.

Module 3

The Business Landscape

  • Business and the Climate Crisis

  • Considering the Role Business Play - Triple bottom line.

  • Reviewing common models; CSR / ESG.

Module 4

Scopes and Offsets

  • Exploring Scope 1, 2 and 3.

  • Looking at the practicalities of offsetting and striking the right balance.

  • Discovering relevant resources such as Carbon Calculators to understand impact.

Module 5

Circularity and UN SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals)

  • Understanding the Circular Economy / Practicalities and Opportunities.

  • Understanding the impact of Events from a carbon perspective.

  • Exploring circularity and partnerships and how they enable Marketers to support a more sustainable marketing agenda.

  • Understanding the UN SDG 17 Goals a global blueprint for wellbeing for all.

  • Examples of how businesses are using the SDGs.

The Role of Effective ESG Communications

  • The changing business operating landscape.

  • Regulation and The Green Claims Code.

  • Exploring the Ways of Driving Effective ESG Communications

  • Exploring employee engagement - Every role is a climate role.

Module 7

Effective Communication

  • Why and how organisations are talking about climate change.

  • The role Partnerships play in driving change and impact.

  • Exploring practical examples from those who are talking about it well.

Module 8

Communication’s Carbon Footprint

  • Considering Carbon Budgets

  • Exploring the carbon impact of key communication channels.

  • Considering where Communication emissions come from.

Learning Outcomes

  • Become carbon literate to formally certify as Carbon Literate with the Carbon Literacy Trust enabling you to become part of the thousands of Carbon Literate citizens around the world.

  • Understand the changing communication landscape – aligning application of communication skills, providing an ESG lens and operating framework to support you in bringing a new dimension of understanding to your role.
